We are a group of climbers who love outdoor bouldering and are working on developing outdoor bouldering sites in Taiwan. Since 2015, we’ve been trying to search for any possibilities that are suitable for bouldering across Taiwan regardless of weather conditions. We seek to provide a safer and more comfortable environment for people who would like to try bouldering outdoors. Current developed areas include – Bihou in Yilan, XiaoWulai in Taoyuan, Dabao in New Taipei city, and Ruilong and Pinglai in NanTou.
Why we love outdoor bouldering?#
we explain that bouldering is an activity that doesn’t require machinery nor does it damage the local resources or habitat. In fact, outdoor bouldering only requires a pair of climbing shoes, a crash pad for safety and our bare hands to climb. As each rock has unique features and textures, climbers can try out different climbing skills and explore the possibilities of making First Ascents. At the end of every outdoor session, climbers should always leave the areas in the same, if not better, condition that they found it in. We respect and are in love with this lightweight and eco-friendly activity.
Why we publish the book? Climbers’ Lost and Dream#
Dajia site, which we began developing in 2017, has many enriched varieties of rocks and is located near the Dajia River, Taichung. Unfortunately, when we visited in 2018, we found the majority of big rocks were replaced by machinery, and part of the river was paved over with concrete. Later, we learnt that this area was being developed into a riverside park to increase the space that locals had for activities. We couldn’t intervene since it’s difficult to explain the value of these boulders to people who are not familiar with outdoor bouldering.
Later that day, we helplessly watched the excavator shovel up the boulders we just brushed and cleaned not long ago and continued to watch their destruction until sunset. While watching, we wondered if outdoor bouldering were more widely known and the value of nature were more commonly respected, would this situation have been different since both the riverside park and the bouldering site share the same value in providing activity space?
This thought accelerated the development process of other sites and the publication of this guidebook. We sincerely hope this book can promote outdoor bouldering, and further raise awareness of the importance to coexist with Nature without unreasonable destruction of nature and river basin mining. We hope that everyone who finds this book useful will share, or learn to share, the same values we have and protect our environment.
The purpose of this book#
To introduce outdoor bouldering to the public and make it more accessible, we decided to publish this book “Taiwan Outdoor Bouldering” with enough information of outdoor bouldering. It will consist of accessibility, coordinates, parking areas, area names, bouldering routes, routes grading…etc. We hope anyone who is interested in outdoor bouldering will find this book helpful. We also hope that you respect local cultures and refrain from damaging any local environment you come across so that Taiwan Outdoor Bouldering may continue to develop sustainably.
